Centre for Molecular Biology & Biotechnology

About Us

About Us

Established in 1990 in Chennai, Molecular Biology is first of its kind with solely focusing on Molecular Biology Research but later on other applied life sciences registered under Scientific Societies Registration Act (Act No. 341/2001 Coll/MIB) and later incorporated under the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (CIN: U92120TN2008PTC068625). The Centre for Molecular Biology emphasizes cutting edge research in Databases, Computational Genomics, Proteomics and Comparative Genomics. The initial goal of this Institute was to create a freely available Human Protein Reference Database using open source technologies and to experimentally verify predicted human genes using molecular biology and proteomics-based methods.

Goals

To promote research into the study of human and other genomes. Complete sequencing of the human genome was a crucial first step towards deciphering the complex network of genes and proteins. The Institute of Bioinformatics is using computational as well as experimental approaches to catalogue genes as well as proteins encoded by the human genome.

To disseminate curated information about human genes and proteins freely to the global scientific community by making scientific data accessible through the World Wide Web and through published articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

To investigate biomarkers in multifactorial diseases such as cancers, neurological and metabolic disorders using high throughput techniques such as Microarray and Mass Spectrometry.

To educate scientists from India and abroad in using the state-of-the-art tools and techniques for genomic and proteomic research. This includes inviting leading researchers from various disciplines to give lectures and to promote collaborative research.

Origin of Biological and Molecular databases

The first molecular biology and biological databases were constructed a few years after the first protein sequences began to become available.

Origin of tools

After the formation of the databases, tools became available to search sequence databases - at first in a very simple way.
